The Role: Temperature Controls Engineer
As a Temperature Controls Engineer at Pulse, you’ll design, install, program, and commission HVAC control systems for commercial, industrial, and institutional buildings. This role combines mechanical and electrical engineering knowledge with building automation expertise to deliver energy-efficient, reliable climate control solutions for clients throughout West Michigan.
What You’ll Do
Design and engineer temperature control systems and sequences of operation for HVAC equipment (air handlers, chillers, boilers, VAV boxes, rooftop units, etc.)
Program, configure, and commission Direct Digital Control (DDC) and Building Automation Systems (BAS), such as Johnson Controls, Siemens, Honeywell, Tridium Niagara, or similar platforms
Develop control drawings, panel layouts, points lists, and wiring diagrams
Perform system startup, calibration, and functional testing to verify proper operation
Troubleshoot and resolve control system malfunctions, sensor failures, and communication issues
Collaborate with mechanical engineers, contractors, and building owners on new construction and retrofit projects
Optimize control sequences to improve energy efficiency and occupant comfort
Conduct on-site inspections and provide technical support during installation
Prepare technical documentation, as-built drawings, and operations/maintenance manuals
Ensure compliance with relevant codes, standards (ASHRAE, NEC), and safety regulations
Provide training to facility staff on system operation and basic troubleshooting
Respond to service calls and provide ongoing technical support to existing clients
What You Bring
Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent hands-on experience)
3+ years of experience in HVAC controls, building automation, or a related engineering discipline
Working knowledge of DDC/BAS platforms and protocols (BACnet, LonWorks,
Modbus)
Strong understanding of HVAC systems, mechanical/electrical drawings, and control sequences
Proficiency with programming and graphics software for BAS front-ends
Familiarity with basic electrical wiring, low-voltage controls, and instrumentation (sensors, actuators, transducers)
Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Valid Michigan driver’s license
Ability to travel to job sites in the Greater West Michigan area
Preferred But Not Required
Experience with Tridium Niagara N4, Johnson Controls Metasys, or Siemens Desigo/Apogee
EIT or PE license
LEED accreditation or energy management certification
Experience with energy audits, retro-commissioning, or fault detection and diagnostics (FDD) tools
Prior experience in a mechanical contracting or controls integration firm
Physical Requirements
Ability to work in mechanical rooms, on rooftops, and in occasionally confined or elevated spaces
Ability to lift up to 25 lbs and climb ladders as needed
Comfortable working in varying indoor and outdoor temperature conditions
